Academic Status: Applicants must be students in good standing at a public or private college or university in Michigan; must have attained at least junior-class status; must have completed at least two semesters of study at the institutions in which they are currently enrolled; and must have an overall grade point average of at least B or its equivalent.

Language Proficiency: Applicants must have good working proficiency in German, at least adequate to meet the professional requirements of their internship assignments.

Work Experience: Applicants must have completed at least six months of successful, practical work experience (in any area of employment) before their internship assignments are to begin.

Personal Characteristics: Applicants must be sufficiently mature to meet the requirements of their internship assignments and the challenges of living in a foreign country. Typically, the personal characteristics that reflect this kind of maturity are, for example, responsibility, determination, capability for hard work, stability under pressure, flexibility, adaptability, sensitivity to cultural differences, patience, an even temper, good listening skills, self-reliance, independence and resourcefulness.

Submission of Application: Applicants must submit a complete written application, consisting of a letter of application, a resume, an offer-of-internship letter, two letters of recommendation, and comprehensive course transcripts.

Scholarship Interview: Applicants must complete an in-person interview with the scholarship committee. Part of the interview will be conducted in German to assess the applicant's basic conversational skills in the language.
